Adobe Illustrator Portrait: Diana Ross
Critical C's
Concept
This project appealed to me because it was something new that I had never done before. I disliked how it was very hard to make things perfect. It is not apparent to the audience viewing it that the picture I used was actually black and white, so I had to choose my own colors to use here and there.
Composition
I used the elements line in defining her features, color in coloring the picture, and value in making shadows. I used the principles emphasis on her red lips because it's the only really bright color in the picture and contrast between her dark skin/hair and light clothing/background. When I look at my artwork I would say that it is a historical reflection/statement because Diana Ross is a Black History Month historical figure. The most dominant principle I used is contrast, and it affects the composition by drawing the eyes to the lighter colors in the photo, like the white necklace, white shirt, and red lips. I used Adobe Illustrator.
Craftsmanship
I developed my idea by Googling different people from the list and deciding which person I thought would be easiest to do since I'm new to this. I didn't really plan it, I just did what I already mentioned, and then started on it. I did this by putting the picture into Illustrator, making a new layer over the photo, and using the pencil tool to outline/trace shapes over it. After that, I filled them all in. Issues I encountered during the process were figuring out how to use the Warp Tool and how to send shapes to the back or front. I solved these issues by playing with the Warp Tool more and figuring out how to resize it to make it easier to use, and I just right-clicked the shapes and saw how you send shapes to the back or front.
Creativity
I was committed to this project. I missed two days and kinda rushed to finish it since some people were already on their Critical C's when I got back. I moved beyond just what the teacher asked of me by trying to put more detail into it with lines and some shadows. I never used Adobe Illustrator before so it was a new method of creating artwork for me. I used old technique by incorporating the knowledge I already have of Adobe Photoshop and kind of using it to figure out Illustrator a little more. I related to this project because I am really picky about eyebrows and makeup and I liked hers, so I enjoyed drawing them more.
Completeness
I changed my artwork after looking at Samantha's and seeing that she used shadows; I added a few shadows. I noticed that I needed to add value to the area under her neck because it looked weird without it. I also added lines for details to make it look better. I also tried to make the picture contrast on purpose to make it more interesting to the eye. I knew I was finished when I looked at it and thought it looked good and that I didn't really need to add anything else to it. I am pretty proud of this artwork because I think it looks pretty good, especially for it being my first time ever using Adobe Illustrator.
